A few words about
Who We Are
History
Our story dates back to 2020, with the desire and vision to dismantle social, economic, and cultural barriers faced by Malawians in BC.
Malawian Association Of British Columbia was founded in 2020 with the aim of fostering a vibrant and inclusive community that celebrates Malawian culture, promotes socioeconomic growth, and empowers individuals to thrive.
Through inclusive collaborative efforts and meaningful engagement, we aim to build strong social connections, provide support and resources, and cultivate opportunities for personal and collective advancement.
By preserving and sharing our rich cultural heritage, fostering economic empowerment, and nurturing a sense of belonging, we strive to create a resilient and prosperous Malawian community that contributes positively to the broader society in British Columbia.
We Are Inclusive
- At the Malawian Association of BC, diversity, equity, and inclusion are core to our values and guide how we operate.
- We are steadfast in being Black-led and Black-serving, with leadership drawn from the Malawian and wider African diaspora who understand first-hand the barriers faced by our communities.
- We extend open arms to Malawians, South Africans, African immigrants, and Canadians of all backgrounds who stand in solidarity with our mission.
- Not only are we committed to preserving and sharing our cultural heritage, but also to creating equitable access to opportunities — whether through mentorship, youth leadership, or economic empowerment — for marginalized voices.
- Our governance structure, succession planning, and program design all aim to counter system inequities, ensuring fairness, transparency, and inclusive participation as we grow.
- We are open to anyone who demonstrates a great level of friendship and support to the community.

A few words about
What We Do
Our projects
Our organization is involved in numerous projects that facilitate seamless integration into Canadian society.
Through inclusive collaborative efforts and meaningful engagement, we aim to build strong social connections, provide support and resources, and cultivate opportunities for personal and collective advancement.
Settlement
Immigrants and newcomers to British Columbia (BC) will naturally encounter a variety of challenges. That’s where we come in. We help newcomers and longtime residents navigate key aspects of life in the province — from practical matters like housing, transportation, and health care to cultural norms and rights.
employment
Newcomers often don’t understand key aspects of the job market, hiring practices, and industry-specific training works. Our association provides insights and guidance for securing gainful work. We provide support for the job search, resume and cover letter creation, and interview processes.
Housing
British Columbia is globally notorious for its competitive and expensive housing market. That’s why we help immigrants avoid common pitfalls. We connect them to the right resources and teach them how the BC rental market works, what documents are needed, what their rights as tenants are, etc.
Financial Literacy
The Canadian financial system is very different from what Malawians and other newcomers might be used to. Our financial literacy program helps tear down these barriers by teaching newcomers financial literacy, including managing money wisely and avoiding debt to build a stable life in BC.
Food Security
The Malawian Association of BC has proposed a food security program to distribute culturally-appropriate food items. Details of the program will be communicated soon.
Consular Services
The Malawian embassy for Canadian residents is located in Washington, D.C. As such, we liaise with them to facilitate the distribution of routine services like passport, visa, and citizenship applications, travel permits, etc. We also can assist with emergency situations, subject to limitations imposed by the consulate.
